It served as the capital from the 4th BC to the 5th AD. Legend tells that the town was named after legendary King Mtskhetos, the son of Kartlos who was the father of Georgian nation. Another legend says that the troops of Alexander the Great occupied Mtskheta and the Parnavaz who relieved the town from the invaders became the first King of Eastern Georgia.

In the 4th century AD St. Nino – Cappadocian maiden started converting Georgia to Christianity from Mtskheta as this was the royal town.

In the 6th century 13 Asyrian Fathers came to Georgia to preach Christianity and one of them was Father Shio after whom the Shio Mghvime Monastery is named.

Today you’ll be able to learn more about the history of Mtskheta and see UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Jvari Monastery (6th century) and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century). Svetitskhoveli is known as the church where the part of Jesus’ Robe is buried and is the holiest church in Georgia.

You’ll also see Samtavro Nunnery, the church where St. Nino lived in a blackberry bush for 6 years. Take a short walk in the tiny town and drive to cave monastery of Shio Mghvime.

After the tour return to Tbilisi.

Available daily

Shio Mghvime part might be unavailable if heavy snow

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=»1/2″][vc_gmaps link=»#E-8_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»][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_images_carousel images=»226,335,331,343,136,206″ img_size=»1040×200″ speed=»3000″ slides_per_view=»3″ autoplay=»yes» hide_pagination_control=»yes» wrap=»yes»][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row full_width=»stretch_row_content_no_spaces» css=».vc_custom_1467023330701{background-image: url(http://georgianinsider.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Mtskheta-WITH-BADRI.jpg?id=252) !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}»][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=»500px» css=».vc_custom_1467757767372{background-image: url(http://georgianinsider.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Mtskheta.jpg?id=800) !important;background-position: center !important;background-repeat: no-repeat !important;background-size: cover !important;}»][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=»1/2″][vc_column_text]Mtskheta & Shio Mghvime Duration 4.5hours Mtskheta is an ancient capital of Georgia.
