David Gareja is a rock-hewn Georgian Orthodox monastery located in Kakheti province of Eastern Georgia, on the semi-desert slopes of Mount Gareja. The area is also home to protected animal species and evidence of some of the oldest human habitations in the region. Gareja is also a gem-stone for those who like bird-watching.<\/p>\n

The monastery was founded in the 6th<\/sup> century by St. David Garejeli, one of the thirteen Assyrian monks who arrived in the country at the same time to preach Christianity. It consists of Lavra and Udabno. Lavra is easily accessible but to reach the painted caves of Udabno you\u2019ll have to walk on an uneven and partially steep path without. The views from the top are really worth of walking up. You\u2019ll see Azerbaijan from the ridge and continue to caves. The roundtrip takes about 2.5 hours.<\/p>\n
